Flags Over Iwo Jima

VIDEO The release of Clint Eastwood's "Flags of Our Fathers" renewed interest in the Battle of Iwo Jima and the historic flag raising atop Mt Suribachi. The historic event captured by Pulitzer prize-winning API photographer Joe Rosenthal was in actuality the second flag raised that day. The first flag-raising, captured by Marine photographer Sgt. Lou Lowrey, occurred two hours earlier.

In 2002, Leatherneck Magazine discovered Lowrey's photographs and provided new evidence of the identities of the men who raised the first flag. "Flags Over Iwo Jima" seeks to expand the history of the Marine Corps, and finally bring recognition to those Americans who braved enemy fire to raise the first American flag atop Mt. Suribachi.
